Rice is extensively grown food crop in India, occupying an area of over 43.77 million hectares (nearly 37% of the total area under cultivation). India is the second largest producer of rice in the world with an annual production of 95.68 million tones of paddy in 2007-08. In India, Rice is grown practically in all the states, but it is mainly cultivated in the coastal areas of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Kerala, Tamil nadu and Odisha.
